I can’t overstate what a fan I am of using an oil transfer to get a drawing from paper to panel or canvas. It is the superior technique. I used it today, with excellent results, and once it dries just a bit, I will be ready to start the under-painting for this reading-themed piece. I’ll use ‘Space Reader’ as a working title.

Space Reader Drawing Transferred to 30×18 inch Aluminum Composite Panel.
I used a 0.5mm mechanical pencil to trace over the drawing, and was able to get a really nice level of detail in the transfer. I find the basic shadow hatching to be really useful when a drawing has as many little drapery folds and contours as this one does.
Sorry but what is oil transfer, could you explain please?
Glad to answer that one, Sean. It is a method for getting a drawing done on paper onto a canvas or panel so it can be painted. You can read all about it here: https://www.bryanlarsen.com/performing-an-oil-transfer/
Hi Bryan! I’m curious how you tone your canvas before this transfer happens. What kind of paint, and what mix of colors?
Hi, Michael. My panel is primed with Rublev Lead Oil Ground tinted with Ivory Black and a bit of Burnt Sienna, although this transfer method would work just as well over an acrylic based primer.
